4.3.Ocean #

Whilst this asset isn’t capable of oceanic rendering, it can be stretched to achieve a believable ocean.

You can quickly create a default ocean object by using GameObject->3D Object->Water->Ocean

The Ocean Follow Behaviour component is specifically tailored to this prefab and cannot be used anywhere else. It uses a pre-made static mesh, consisting out of 7 levels of detail. It snaps each LOD to a specific grid size, which allows them to move freely along the XZ axis without inducing jittering.

This prefab provides a high vertex density near the camera, whilst gradually reducing it towards the horizon. This is crucial for vertex animations such as waves or ripples to work.

In total the surface spans 8x8km so easily stretches beyond the camera’s rendering distance. However, if the camera moves up high enough the border becomes visible.

True oceanic rendering involves techniques such as FFT wave simulations and CDLOD dynamic meshing. This all falls outside of the scope for this asset.
